Why not to use Squarespace, Wix, or Weebly

Using Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, or some other commercial page builders can be risky for your business

We will explain here why not to use Squarespace and others like it. Besides taking away from the freedom of free, open-source web design, you may be charged fake fees or features that may only take a single line of code.

If you build your website with one of those builders, then that website is not compiled like a real website — it can’t be modified freely like you should be able to. Those builders put a restriction on what you should be able to do to your own site because it’s not really yours. If you want to make even small changes to your code/files, they will either not allow you to or charge you for something that should be free and quick.

If your website actually belongs to you, then you can move your website files/data freely across other web servers and all along it still belongs to you. Some examples of web servers/hosting sites include:

Amazon AWS

Microsoft Azure

BlueHost

HostGator

Godaddy (I don’t recommend for hosting)

Some web servers can be faster or more reliable than others. Godaddy is not very fast and uses some older, public mainframes, so I don’t recommend it. These details alone are reason enough for why not to use Squarespace and others like.

A CMS (content management system) is still allows one to create a real website that you entirely own yourself, but it allows some code-free customization and ease of user management. In addition, popular CMS platforms like WordPress have a large community of support which has increased their options for plugins — making it easy, and often free, to add features/enhancements to your website.
